Jim Thorpe, PA is located in Carbon County in the Poconos region of the state. It was originally known as Mauch Chunk and was one of the first coal boom towns in the United States. However, in 1954, the town changed its name to Jim Thorpe to honor the great athlete of the same name who is now buried on the edge of town. Free Range Folk came together in 2010 over longstanding interests in farming, family, a back-to-basics lifestyle, and general love of the outdoors and music.
The park is centered around a beautiful lake that is home to a popular beach during the summertime. There are also several miles of hiking and biking trails, including the aforementioned Switchback Railroad Trail. This train leaves from the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey train station at the northeastern end of town near the Lehigh River. While there are a variety of excursions you can take, the most popular options are their daily sightseeing tours, which are either 45 minutes or 70 minutes in length depending on the season. Parking, on the other hand, can be difficult to come by, especially on weekends in October (when it’s a great spot to see fall foliage in PA) and during the holiday season.
Along with these sports, Jim Thorpe is popular among railroading fans for its passenger rail service, and is known for its extraordinary architecture. The town grew slowly in its first decade, then rapidly around 1818 grew larger as it became an anthracite coal-shipping center. (The other large city with growing coal mining in the region was Scranton, with a population of over 140,000.) Mauch Chunk is on a Lehigh River west side (right bank) flat where Mahoning Creek enters and is a tributary of the Lehigh River. The river's left bank community of East Mauch Chunk, which has more of the houses of modern Jim Thorpe, was settled later to support the short-lived Beaver Creek Railroad, the mines which spawned it, and the logging industry. The most popular route is to bike upriver through Lehigh Gorge State Park, with more than 20 miles of uninterrupted trail allowing you to bike to near White Haven, PA. On select days, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway runs biking excursions that allow you to take the train upriver, and then bike back down the trail.
The Grand Finale: Dan Hugos, Co-Founder of Mauch Chunk Opera House Shows, Retires
In the 1950s Mauch Chunk looked for unique ways to escape poverty and despair. This mine was the longest-running anthracite coal mine in the world operating from 1855 until 1972. There are miles of tunnels here, some of which extend as far as 800 feet below the earth’s surface. The Switchback Railroad Trail extends for 18 miles from Jim Thorpe to Summit Hill, where the original coal mines were located. The railroad tracks are long gone, though you can still see some remnants from its past along the trail. Bright Path Brewing features a beautiful and airy taproom, and, during my visit, had 10 beers on draft, including a larger variety of lagers than many other breweries in PA that I’ve visited.
Pennsylvania Route 903 has its southern terminus at U.S. 209 in Jim Thorpe. It is a north–south route that runs northeast of town, connecting to PA 115 near the Pocono Raceway, Interstate 476, and PA 534 in Penn Forest Township. AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that empowers people to choose how they live as they age. In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. But for Dan Hugos, the founder of JTAMS with business partner Vincent DeGiosio, the company that produces shows at the opera house, it’s the final curtain. After 19 years, he sold his shares of the company to DeGiosio, and has retired. “I’ve recently been diagnosed with a neurological disease, so maintaining my health has been the number one priority for me. In the later part of the 20th century, outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, and white water rafting gained popularity.

The band’s music includes elements of Americana, bluegrass and acoustic rock. As the opera house concerts expanded, Hugos continued to travel from NYC on weekends while managing the business. In 2005, he took the leap and moved to Jim Thorpe full time, keeping things afloat financially by working as a database programmer for PA companies like Air Products, PPL, Carpenter Steel, CompAid, and DEKA Battery. “I was working full-time, non-stop, 7 days a week, but it was the only way to keep the opera house going,” he said. I also manually focused my camera so that the focus could be the exact same for all three photos. Anyone who is aware of DSLR photography will know that it would be very easy to “alter” the light output to make a particular setup look brighter or darker. The Disney Treasure will sail Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida beginning Saturday, December 21, 2024 with her maiden voyage, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. Afterwards, the Disney Treasure’s inaugural season will consist of 7-Night itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from PortCanaveral. Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club members can book a Disney Treasure cruise as early as September 12, 2023 when tired booking begins for Pearl Members, with general booking open to all on September 20, 2023. Most of the ship's Eastern Caribbean itineraries will include the same ports, but a few swap out St. Thomas for San Juan, Puerto Rico. Disney has announced that the maiden voyage for Disney Treasure will be Dec. 21, 2024, on a seven-night sailing from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), Florida. The Disney Treasure will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany – as was her sister ship the Wish. They will also build the seventh as yet unnamed Disney ship which is due to be launched in 2025. The Disney Treasure will be the sixth ship to join the Disney fleet and will be a Triton Class ship with the same basic design as the Wish. It is only a couple of months since Disney Cruise Line welcomed the new Disney Wish to the fleet.

Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club members can book a Disney Treasure cruise as early as Sept. 12, 2023, and bookings will open to all guests on Sept. 20, 2023. Plaza de Coco will be the first theatrical dining experience themed to the popular film Coco. The Coco-themed dining experience will feature dining tables surrounding a central stage where performances and show effects spread throughout the room. That’s another not-so-hidden gem on that ship, and weaving Jungle Cruise into it could be perfect. In our experience aboard the Wish, this space is often overcrowded and chaotic–not necessarily with guests at this bar, but with those waiting for other spaces to open up.
For over 15 years she has shared her love of Disney Parks, Disney Cruises and Universal Orlando. In over 30 years of Disney Travel she has spent countless months in Disney Parks and has sailed on over 45 cruises. Not too sure about a Haunted Mansion-themed restaurant on Disney Treasure though and think this is more likely to be a bar. Disney is constantly innovating and improving but remember that all technology has a price and that a considerable amount of money will most certainly have been spent on designing the Star Wars bar.
For an even more luxurious experience, the Disney Treasure has four royal suites that were inspired by beloved Disney cat characters from movies such as “The Jungle Book” And “Aladdin”. More specifically, there will be 1,133 outside staterooms and 123 inside staterooms. The themed lounge called Skipper Society will bring to life the funny, classic Jungle Cruise attraction from Walt Disney World. Then there’s the Periscope Pub that’s inspired by Walt Disney’s 1954 film, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. For the first time ever on a Disney Cruise Line ship, some elements from Disney theme parks were incorporated into some special spots and attractions. There’s the Tomorrow Tower Suite that was inspired by EPCOT, the beloved, science-forward Walt Disney World theme park.
Skipper Society Lounge is the Jungle Cruise-themed lounge created in the vision of higher-end skippers relaxing at the end of their day.
